There are No Rules in Blogging.

The first rule of Fight Club is that you don’t talk about Fight Club.

The second rule of Fight Club is that you DON’T talk about Fight Club.

Sorry, I just had to include that quotation since I just finished wathching Fight Club and it is one of my all time favorites.  But after enjoying the movie, I began to wonder if there are any rules in Blogging?

I say that the answer to that question is NO.  Hey, it is your blog, you can do whatever you want to with it.  Just because everyone else in the blogging world has 125 by 125 ads, doesn’t mean you have to.  Even if 99.9 of blogs allow for comments, you can choose to not allow them.  You don’t even have to offer your readers the opportunity to subscribe to your blog if that is what makes you happy.

Of course, those are all extreme examples of how you can prove that you a truly in charge of all aspects of your blog.   But what motivated me (besides watching Fight Club) to construct this post is a recent conversation I had with a fellow blogger.  We were discussing various keywords in which we were getting some decent Google traffic.  My friend told me he was getting quite a good deal of traffic with a post he had wrote about a year ago about an ad network.  Someone named Sarah had posted a comment an he used the word “palindrome” in his post.  You see where this is going, right.  Of course, he also used the word “sucks” in his post, so he is now getting some nice traffic from google from various searches that include the keywords sucks, palin, sarah.

After laughing for a while, I told him that he should edit his post and include all sorts of ads for Obama merchandise.  His response:  “Am I allowed to edit a post after I publish it.  Doesn’t Google punish you for that or something?”

Nope.  The first rule of blogging is that there are no rules in blogging.

The second rule of blogging is . . .
