Many bloggers (including me) started their blogs with the hopes of getting rich–probably rather quickly. After reading blogs from John Chow and ShoeMoney, I figured that I would try to get a piece of the action. If they could make thousands a month, couldn’t I make a couple hundred??? Well, it turns out that it is much harder than it looks to make money via blogging. Let’s face it, at this point the internet is overly saturated with personal finance and making money blogs. The only way you could face more competition on the web is if you started your own porn site.
So, I am giving up on blogging and advice all of you to do the same. NO, it’s really not that much of a hopeless situation. I now realize that when (and if) money is actually generated from this blog, hours of hard work must first be accomplished. I must significantly increase my readership by continually producing valued posts. Next, I will have to purchase my own domain (move on from wordpress) and then purchase a package from Hostgator or a similar company. Finally, I will be able to put ads on my blog and maybe if I am lucky, my blog will actually generate some revenue.
Until I reach that point in the future, I will just continue blogging for fun and to get referrals for my programs. Thus far, my blog journey has been a blast. I get borderline euphoric every time someone comments on my site or I have a high traffic day. Hopefully, you will continue to join me on my path to making money with my blog.
Speaking of money, I have updated my Current Earnings Page. As you can see Revolution Money Exchange has quickly become a top earner for me.

I am with you about blogging. Many people have tried it and realized the work involved is pretty crazy. You gotta love what you do for sure.

It is a long term investment, but the longest journey begins with a single step. My domain and hosting from Dreamhost cost me about $30 for the first year.
I would recommend not blogging about how to make money like John Chow and ShoeMoney do. It becomes circular and if you start off with no traffic, you won’t be able to make money and you’ll look like a failure… leading to no traffic.
If you enjoy blogging it can’t hurt to take small steps towards gaining readership and earning a tiny bit money. If you do decide to give it a shot, send me an e-mail and I’ll point you in the direction of a couple of tips.
Couldn’t agree with you more. Blog with intention to make more traffic, then only we go for the money.
Why not you try VPS or dedicated hosting? More reliable and you have more control on your own hosting. And the best part is you don\’t have to share with others. Price of course is the issues for some normal webmaster and blogger.
Absolutely. You’re right on, here.
I think the reason most people fail is they think they can take the easy road and not put much effort into their writing – which won’t get much traffic.
It takes true skill to write well and get the traffic required to make any serious money.
Thanks for posting this.
You are absolutely correct. As with most activities that reap some sort of reward (whether it be financial or otherwise), an investment is neccesary. If you are passionate about what you do, and have the patience to carry on without initially making profit, you will most certainly succeed.
