Hitting the Mainstream

Yesterday at about 2:00pm, I noticed that I had received yet another spam comment and was all set to erase the pingback. But this spam comment was different, it was not about viagara, cialis, some kind of crazy porn. Wait–this was not spam at all, but instead was a trackback from the MSN Money Smart Spending Blog. One of my posts, Sale Can Sometimes be Just Another Four Letter Word. had been featured there. I was ecstatic to say the least.  Luckily, I happened to be off yesterday and discovered that my post was featured within 10 minutes of it being posted on MSN.

After doing a little more celebrating, I quickly put up a welcome post for MSN readers that included similar posts that I thought readers might find interesting.  I also added this information to my actual post that was featured.  Lastly, I rearranged some of my ads in hopes to generate some extra revenue.

So what did being featured at MSN do to The Red Stapler Cronicles?

To begin with, I will be able to attract more advertisers and future readers because of this event.  Being featured at MSN basically brings instant credibility to this blog and adds an important line to it’s resume.  In addition, as of 11:30 pm EST, the article at MSN had received 2,250 views–that’s a lot of people who at the very least have been exposed to this blog.  Finally, placing the welcome message did its job of making this blog more sticky, as all the post I chose to feature got at least 20 extra hits.

On the negative side, I really believed that I would get more traffic than I did.  Presently, I have received about 125 hits from the article.  Don’t get me wrong, that is a great number and dwarfs any previous referrer.  However, I thought that the article would generate more traffic.  In addition, I was really surprised that I did not receive a single additional comment (on the featured post or any other one) from any MSN visitor.  People did comment about the post on MSN, but did not at The Red Stapler Chronicles even though I specifically invited them.

Despite these disappointments, yesterday was a banner day for this blog.  I might even print out the MSN article and make sure it ends up in a place of honor.  Yes, I think it might be worthy of a spot on my parent’s refrigerator.

I had the same thing happen to me…most of the big referral sites visitors are normally not very sticky so only come in for a quick glance. The one good aspect, as you mentioed, is it builds your brand and presence. It will also help your Alexa rating.

NB: I came from the MSN site – so here is your comment you missed out on!

Congrats. It is shame it didn’t bring you more hits. On the flip-side I bet that MSN link will help you in your google search results. Best of luck and hopefully your next trip to the mainstream isn’t far off.

  5. Good job. I also believe that getting several successes like this one build on each other so together they provide a larger boost than just adding the impact of each one together. So you not only gain the hits… now but set yourself up for bigger rewards as you gain more similar successes.

It’s of real honor being published on MSN. Well last year I used to run a money blog where I had very few posts but detailed ones; I too had some of my posts featured on MSN. And it drew massive traffic towards my blog and also helped it getting nice rankings in Google. All search engines are somehow close to each other in terms of ranking algos.
