How to Ruin a Blogger’s Day

As I was driving home from work today, I was thinking about what my post would be about today.  I had several rough ideas, but nothing concrete.  After grabbing something to eat, checking my email, and approving a couple of comments, I was all set to start posting.

To my great dismay, I was unable to accomplish posting since I could not access my blog.  At first I though that there was something wrong with my computer so I tried rebooting it twice.  But the only site I couldn’t get to work was mine.  I then go to my hosting company and immediately found the culprit.  The company I use to host this blog, Bluehost, was experiencing server difficulties.  “2008-07-16 19:24:54: Unforseen Power Failure. Service will be restored as soon as possible” was the dreaded error message I received.  GRRRRRRRR.

Alright, hopefully this outage will be quickly fixed–after all, I had never before experienced a single second of downtime.  I played around surfing other blogs and websites, periodically checking to see if my blog was back up.  Nope.  At one point I decided that I would just construct my post using a word processor and then just copy and paste it when my service was restored.  It’s funny, I couldn’t write more than five words without my beloved wordpress “write post” screen.

Hooray!! Three hours have now passed and I have regained access to my blog.  After throwing up in my mouth looking at my my traffic chart at zero for the last couple of hours, I begin writing this post tirade.  Never before have the words so quickly been transfered from my head to my screen.  Still, let me tell you–it really sucks to not be able to access your blog and knowing that people all over the internet can not view your site.  It was impossible for me to remove the image in my head that someone like John Chow was about to discover my blog and tell his readers about it, but he was instead greeted with an error message.  Yes, now I am exaggerating, but you get my point.  Strike one Bluehost.

  1. Really, bluehost were down?? I have been online all day long and I did not notice anything. Did you chat with the technical team from the chat enable on their website?

  2. All of bluehost was not down, just a couple of servers. Unfortunately, my blog lives on one of those servers. I did not contact the tech team, although if the outage lasted longer I would have. To their credit, they were very helpful when I moved my blog.

  3. To be perfectly honest. power failures aren’t exactly something that are under a hosting company’s control. Back up generators can only do so much - the techs work as quickly as possible to get things back up and running, but you know, it does take time. The only time I have issues with my host being down is if it goes on for days at a time with it being up and down, up and down. Otherwise, I just let it be. No server is ever going to have perfect uptime.
