Recession Proof Businesses

Holy ressession proof industry Batman, The Dark Knight movie set a new record by making $155.34 in its first weekend of release. Yes, these numbers are helped by the fact that the average price of a movie ticket is over $7 (where I live it is $9), but that is still a lot of people flocking to the theater. Even during the Great Depression, Americans continued to frequent the movies. I guess a two hour escape from reality is really priceless.

So besides Hollywood, are there any other businesses that are recession proof or even thrive during a recession? Although I have no statistical proof that these businesses are in fact recession proof, I though it would be fun to come up with a list.
1. Funeral Homes–All the money in the world will not prevent you from eventually visiting one.

2. Pawn Shops–I would think that they are thriving and there is a new one opening near me
3. Hospitals and Health Care–More stress equals more sickness
4. Check Cashing Store–pretty obvious
5. Bicycle Shops–As gas prices go up. . .
6. Liquor Stores–to drown our sorrows away
7. Newsstands that Sell Lottery Tickets–all you need is a dollar and a dream
8. Temp Services–As companies scale down full time jobs with benefits, they are more likely to turn to these agencies.
9. Securtiy–Desperate people can do desperate things

10. Debt Collection–This business must be booming
11. Handymen/Mechanics–Things still break, especially when you skip preventative maintenance.

12. Pornography–I will leave this one alone
13. Politics–Hey, we will need new people to blame for the economy
14. Dollar Stores–another easy one
15. Tax Preparation–unless we need #1, there is no escaping
16. Toilet Paper Manufactures–I really don’t think demand will ever go down and if we eat more cheap food like Taco Bell . . .
Do you have any others that I need to add to the list?

I agree with the funeral homes and pawnshop. They never would be out of style. I guess they are here to stay, though the fact remains we don’t really like going there.

Great post. In addition to liquor stores, I’ve heard the alcohol rehabilitation business is booming as well.

This article was great. It’s really true that some businesses resist crises. People tend to think that a slow economy freezes all economic activity, but that’s not true. People turn to cheaper stores and cheaper options, and like you said, some businesses will resist crises.
Thanks for a great article.
One set of businesses that I’ve heard that are thriving are all those little £1 stores, people are believing that the ‘credit crunch’ is going to decimate our entire economy so are trying to get things for less.
Wal-Mart - People are always shopping for low prices
