The 12 Best Fictional Songs in TV and Movie History

Have you ever watched a movie or tv show that featured a fictional band or character performing a song that you thought was actually pretty good?

I am willing to bet that you have as there are countless examples.  In fact, there is an entire website dedicated to fictional bands called Rocklopedia Fakebandica that I came across while researching this post.

As a result, without further ado, here are my top 12 songs sung by a character in a movie or tv show that I would actually put on my ipod.

12.  Jackie Moon’s “Love Me Sexy” from Semi-Pro. “I’m talking rain forest sweaty. . .I’m talking swamp sweaty. . .Let’s fill the bathtub full of sweat. . . ” Unfortunately, this song was the best part of the movie

11. Aldous Snow’s “Inside of You” from Forgetting Sarah Marshall Sung by actor Russel Brand and written by Jason Segal, the lyrics to this song are hilarious and it actually has a catchy tune! Honorable mention goes to “We Got to Do Something”, shown in the movie when we first meet Aldous.

10.  Robbie Hart’s “Somebody Kill Me” from The Wedding Singer Adam Sandler comes up with another hit here. Maybe he should stop making movies and just concentrate on making up funny songs.

9.  “Sugar High” from Empire Records Renee Zellweger’s part makes this song a classic hit. A little known fact is that this performance is what ultimately led the producers of Chicago to select her :)

8.  The Wonders’ “That Thing You Do” –This song really did become a hit, getting as high as 24 in the Top 40 Mainstream charts.

7.  Phoebe Buffay’s “Smelly Cat” from Friends “Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat, What are they feeding you? Smelly Cat, Smelly Cat It’s not your fault”

6.  Hot Sundae’s “Break a Sweat” from Saved By the Bell Now you know where Elizabeth Berkley got some of the moves she used in Showgirls.

5.  The Max Rebo Band Song in Return of the Jedi I had no idea that these group of aliens actually had a name. However, there song kicks some serious ass. I always liked the blue elephant-looking guy the best.

4.  The Zit Remedy’s “Everybody Wants Something” from Degrassi Junior High Joey, Snake, and Wheels knew how to win over those Canadian ladies. If you have never seen Degrassi Junior High (the 80’s version), you really need to watch some episodes on YouTube.

3. School of Rocks’ “Teacher’s Pet” from School of Rock These kids really have some skills. It’s really a shame they didn’t put together more songs.

2.  Stillwater’s “Fever Dog” from Almost Famous. Can you please welcome from Troy Michigan. . . STILLWATER!!!!!!!!!!!!! This song rocks and so does the movie.  It’s all happening!!!

1.  “Scotty Doesn’t Know” from EuroTrip Matt Damon does a good job lip singing and Lustra does the rest. This song was actually my ring tone for over a year. “I can’t believe he’s so trusting. . . While I’m right behind you thrusting!”

Have any songs that I missed and just need to be on this list?

She also does one called “Big Bar Hair” that’s hilarious

  17. I thought Robbie Hart’s “Somebody Kill Me” should be higher up on that list.

  18. ill agree with the post mentioning Spinal Tap -take you pick from the brilliant songs on there. Though they are actually ‘touring’ and bringing out another album -no joke.

Repo: a genetic opera is also worth checking out if you like your movies filled with songs

  19. No prob Kevin. I accidentally posted the Revenge of the Nerds song for Teen witch. The real link is this -

  20. These fictional characters and their songs are truly more demonstrative of a true hot celebrity than many real life hot celebrities. I think these songs have to say a lot for their actual writers and composers and not the people actually singing them for in real life the writers are the true stars not those who but the rights to the songs.

  21. These are really cool! My favorite’s the one from School of Rock. I agree those kids have some real talent! Such a cool idea to have a kid rock band. I wish they added another song or two to the movie. Thanks!

  29. Yeah, the Zit Remedy is amazing… Poor joey, his wife died, his son is on coke, and even Caitlin left him. The new Degrassi is crap compared to the old ones.
