The Starbucks Conspiracy

Before I went to work today, I decided to catch up on some news. After reading (and celebrating) that the stock market was having a great day, something else caught my attention. On both MSNBC and CNN, a front page headline contained a article about Starbucks.

No, Starbucks was not declaring bankruptcy. No, there was not some kind of shooting at a Starbucks. No, Miley Cyrus was not seen kissing one of the Jonas brothers while in line for a latte. Instead, the articles were about the company starting a new promotion in which they will offer their customers a $2 price for a cold drink in the afternoon as long as they bring in their receipt of an morning purchase.

Give me a break. Is this really major news? Is $2 such a great deal for a cold drink? Can someone please tell me why this was one of the biggest news stories of the day? What a joke!!!

The people in charge of press relations at Starbucks must have some compromising pictures of lots of high ranking executives at both CNN and MSNBC. I really need to hire them to promote my blog. Somehow they would be able to get me on the front page of CNN every time I change my font.

This entire situation reminds me of a great quote from one of my favorite movies–Fight Club:

“When deep space exploration ramps up, it’ll be the corporations that name everything, the IBM Stellar Sphere, the Microsoft Galaxy, Planet Starbucks.”

In case you haven’t noticed, we apparently are all living on Planet Starbucks!!

  6. It’s kind of news in a way that Starbucks is known for charging outrageous prices for their drinks, and this price cut is another way for them to keep you addicted to their coffee, but mostly just a free press release for them…

  7. They consider $2 a bargain? They should have their head examined.

  8. I think the fact is that it is publicity, any publicity is good even if it’s bad publicity.

I have seen negative publicity push sales up in companies by 23% over a 7 period. So it does work.
