Did you hear about the town in Wyoming in which tragedies kept on occurring on the same calender day? Be warned, it’s pretty freaky.
In January of 1976, town officials in Uinita, Wyoming decided that they could not take another alcohol related tragedy. On the same date in four previous years the following happened:
1972–A drunk driver ran into antelope, killing both the driver and the antelope.
1973–The school principal arrived to work completely drunk, exposed himself to an entire auditorium of shocked students, and then hung himself on the flag pole at recess.
1974–Town Mayor Abe Frohman was arrested after authorities found him in a drunken state attending an illegal elk fight. Frohman had been mayor for 27 years and was loved by all.
1975–A group of friends on their annual hunting trip had a little too much to drink and thought it would be a good idea to target bear cans on tree stumps. Unfortunately, one of the bullets ricocheted and hit one of the hunters. After a 3 month stint in the hospital, he finally lost his battle and passed away.
In 1976, town officials were desperate to end their unfortunate streak, so they took the unprecedented action to ban the consumption of liquor on the anniversary of the tragedies. All bars and liquor stores are required to close on that day and anyone caught imbibing alcohol has to serve a mandatory 6 month prison term.
Did this crazy measure work, you ask? Well, for 33 years and counting, this law has allowed the town to break their little curse and no alcohol related incidents have occurred. Because of the success of this program, neighboring towns have adopted it and finally in 2007 the entire state of Wyoming has celebrated this No Liquor Day.
During his recent trip to Washington, Wyoming governor Dave Freudenthal (D) told President Obama about this little story, and Obama was very intrigued. In fact, he is even thinking of writing a bill that would make this no liquor day a national holiday.
Let’s help pass this new holiday. Please feel free to place the following badge on your myspace/facebook pages, your websites and blogs, and your twitter page. Together we can make sure that no one ever dies again on this day because of alcohol!!!
