About two months ago, I decided to change The Red Stapler Chronicles to a do-follow blog, meaning that anyone who left a comment would receive a free backlink. It certainly was not an easy decision to make. Yes, I knew that I would get many more comments and would be able to submit my blog to several do-follow directories. However, I was worried that these benefits would not compensate for the free backlinks “bleeding away my Page Rank.”

So how is the do follow experiment working for me? Although I have noticed a sharp increase in spam comments, my legit comments have seen tremendous growth. For me, these comments give me the fuel and motivation to continue blogging. In addition, the traffic generated by the do follow directories has surpassed my expectations.

As regular readers of this blog already know, when Google recently updated their page ranks, this blog received an impressive (and quite unexpected) page rank of 4. Therefore, the only major negative result of switching to do follow simply did not occur. Of course, I have more moderation to complete to prevent the Google death sentence of “linking to a bad neighborhood.” But all in all, I can classify the switch to do follow as a big success!!!

In other news, this week is Shark Week on the Discovery Channel. The previews have been awesome. Any other Shark week fans out there?

No, I’m not enjoying Shark Week. Because of Shark Week, one of my favorite shows, Verminators, was pre-empted last night.

Very good to know that DoFollow does not affect Pagerank. I myself is doing some tests on DoFollow at the moment. In fact the latest is to find if DoFollow people are telling the truth. You my friend, is a DoFollow person! according to my tests.
The dofollow aspect does make you feel more welcome to visit again. Generating good repeat traffic will help your blog to grow. Also, repeat visitors , as you had mentioned, keep you motivated to continue.

Glad to hear the switch has worked out for you! I have only recently started reading a substantial number of blogs on a regular basis, but I have found it somewhat perplexing that so many of them are nofollow. Seems to me like it kills some of the community spirit that makes the blogosphere that makes it such an interesting place to hang out. Good work, and best of luck!
@Donna
I like verminators too, but shark week takes precedent as it is only once a year.
Obviously, all traffic is not equal. However, if you get a large surge of traffic from do-follow lists, even if only one of ten visitors :stick,” it’s worth turning follow on.
If you use a good spam blocker, the change is trivial.
Good luck!
My blog is also a “do-follow” but it didn’t generate much traffic or it encourage people to comment or spam..Simply because I only found out today about Do-follow directories where we could submit our blog for free. I only started submitting my blog to these directories. I hope I could expect some improvements.

I enjoy the shark week on discovery, particularly the Mythbusters specials. I really wish MB starting filming in high definition though. It’s strange that it is one of their most popular shows on discovery but it’s not in HD TV.
Well, in either case, you can still call it spam. Whether the visitor IS interested in your blog/post and comments with interest or not and just wants a link. In other words, it depends on the blog owner himself/herself whether (s)he is willing to appreciate the comments and accepting the links in exchange or just as a sign of appreciation, simple as that. If not, then by all means, removing the ‘URL’ field takes 2 seconds! Google that out. Don’t leave the URL and then judging people for spamming, most are not spamming, they post with interest and once they see the option of leaving their website URL, why not?
I’m all for DOFOLLOW or just remove the URL field! Don’t leave it with nofollow, that’s more a trick in making some people comment without interest. So anyway, all for dofollow,
Cheers!
I have installed DoFollow on all my blogs hopefully this will attract more visitors and more links for everyone.

Hello, I’m pretty new to blogging and have only now started researching dofollow vs. nofollow. Since my blog is fairly new, traffic is pretty important to me right now, and I do agree with you that seeing those comments will encourage more blogging.
Would you be interested in writing for The Neave Online Publication? I love your writing style and I feel like you would fit in perfectly with the other writers.
Thanks for the tips. I agree, a dofollow is much better and less limitng to the author as well than a nofollow blog.
